#118 The Halifax Parent's Guide to Summer Camps 2026 — And Why a Music Camp Might Be the Best Decision You Make This Summer

Updated: May 6

By Christy | Practicing Pro

If you're a Halifax parent working through the summer camp decision right now, you're in good company. Every spring, families across the city weigh the same questions: What will my child actually learn? Will they make friends? Will they come home happy? And honestly — will the schedule work for our family?

This guide is written from our perspective as music educators. We run summer music camps in Halifax, and we've been doing it for fifteen years. We're going to be honest with you about what to look for in any camp, name a couple of Halifax options we are also excited about, and yes — tell you about our own. We think you deserve and will appreciate the full picture.

What to Look For in a Summer Camp (Any Camp)

Before you register anywhere, here are some questions worth asking:

What is the student-to-teacher ratio?
This is the single most important factor in whether your child has a meaningful week or gets lost in a crowd. A ratio of 5:1 or 6:1 means your child receives real attention and guidance. A ratio of 15:1 means they're one of many.

Are instructors professionals in their field — or general summer staff?
Many camps hire enthusiastic counsellors who rotate children through activities. There is nothing wrong with this, but it is a very different experience from learning alongside a certified, practising expert in the discipline. Ask directly who will be teaching your child and what their qualifications are.

Is there a goal the whole week builds toward?
The best camps give children something to work toward — a performance, a presentation, a finished project, a final showcase. This sense of purpose is what transforms a fun week into a week children remember for years.

Does every day include time outside, moving, and playing freely?
This is not a luxury — it is essential. Children learn more, focus better, and come home genuinely happy when their bodies have moved and their lungs have had fresh air. A camp that keeps children seated and focused indoors all day without outdoor play is missing something important, regardless of how strong the curriculum is. Look for a camp that weaves outdoor time into every single day as a non-negotiable part of the schedule, not an afterthought.

Does the schedule actually work for working parents?
Many camps run 9 AM to 12 PM or 9 AM to 4 PM — which creates a logistical gap that can be genuinely stressful for working families. Find out if extended care is available, what it costs, and how flexible pickup and drop-off actually are.

Two Halifax Camps Worth Knowing About

Creative Kids Summer Camps (creativekids.info) is one of Halifax's best-known STEAM and arts camp programs, running July through August for children from pre-primary through Grade 8. Their camps blend science, technology, art, and creative exploration in a structured day program with extended hours (7 AM–6 PM at no extra charge). If your child loves to build, make, and experiment, Creative Kids is a strong choice.

The Discovery Centre Summer Camps (thediscoverycentre.ca) runs science-focused day camps out of Halifax's beloved hands-on science museum. Programs run in weekly themes — biology, chemistry, engineering — for school-aged children. The Discovery Centre is a trusted Halifax institution, and their camps bring the museum experience to life in a smaller-group setting. Worth noting: late pickup fees apply after 5 PM, so check the details for your family's situation.

Both are well-run programs. Both serve similar age ranges. Both are worth a look if your child's interests lean toward science and technology.

And if your child loves music — or you've been wondering whether music camp could be something special — read on.

What Makes a Music Camp Different

A music camp isn't just camp with instruments. Done well, it offers something in addition to what science camps and art camps rarely can: the experience of working toward a live performance as a team, in real time, with real goals.

Children who spend a week rehearsing, learning, collaborating, and then walking out onto a stage in front of their families go through something that stays with them. They learn to build confidence. They learn what it feels like to be truly prepared. They learn that hard work in front of people they care about is worth it. These lessons travel far beyond the instrument.

At a general summer program, a music might be one of fifteen rotating activities. At a dedicated music camp, music is the heartbeat of the week — and outdoor time, movement, and friendship are woven through every single day, not traded away for it.

Scotia Suzuki Summer Music Camps 2026 — The Full Picture

We have run summer music camps in Halifax every year since 2017. In nine years, we have never had a camp that wasn't full. We share that not to brag, but because we think it tells you something.

Here is what we offer in 2026:

Camp 1: Music Discovery Summer Camp — July 13–17, 2026

For children ages 6 and up (one full year of school completed). This camp is designed for children who want to discover music — piano, violin, singing, movement (musical theatre), and visual arts all woven through one magical week. No experience needed. We provide all instruments and supplies.

  • Full Day (9 AM – 4 PM): $287/week
  • Morning Only (9 AM – 12 PM): $172/week
  • Ready Set Violin class with a parent (ages 3–7): $87/week
  • Free extended care included: 8 AM drop-off, 5 PM pickup, every day, no extra cost

Camp 2: Music Intensive Summer Camp — July 20–24, 2026

For ages 7–18. Suzuki and non-Suzuki students are always welcome. This year's Dayly (one class) cultural focus is African Music, Song & Dance, featuring professional guest artist Toria Aidoo. Students work in small groups by level, receiving focused instruction from our certified Suzuki teachers, the rest of the day and build toward a full concert performance for family and friends on the final day.

  • $387/week | 9 AM – 4 PM | Free extended care 8 AM–5 PM included

What Sets Our Camps Apart

Every day includes time outside.
Regardless of whether your child is in the Music Discovery Camp or the Music Intensive, every single day includes dedicated time outdoors — fresh air, movement, and unstructured play with new friends. This isn't a break from learning. It is part of learning. Children who move and breathe and laugh outside come back to their instruments with more focus, more energy, and more joy. We have watched it happen every summer for nine years. Children who might be nervous walking in on Monday morning are eager to come back on Tuesday. By Friday, they don't want it to end.

Our student-to-teacher ratio is among the highest of any summer camp program in Halifax.
Every lead instructor holds Suzuki Association of the Americas certification — this is not a standard reached at all music programs. Certified Suzuki teachers complete training that goes significantly beyond a music degree, and they teach the way they were trained: with patience, with attention to the individual child, and with genuine belief that every child can succeed.

We bring in professional guest artists.
This year, Toria Aidoo joins us for the Intensive Camp, offering students an encounter with African music, song, and dance that simply cannot be replicated in a classroom or a standard lesson week. Ben Rutz, touring violinist for Canadian Icon, Johnny Reid, will also be joining us at camp this year! These experiences change how children hear and think about music.

Every camp ends with a full performance concert.
Families travel across the city to attend. Children perform what they have spent the week building. It is the moment that makes everything real.

Free extended care — 8 AM to 5 PM — is included in every registration.
Not as an add-on. Not for an extra fee. Every day. Drop off as early as at 8am. Pick up as late as 5pm. Done.

Our Halifax music camp is leading with this because most camps don’t offer it. We do because tragic deals can be stressful or arranging work so we are so happy to offer this.

One Question We Get Every Year

"My child doesn't take lessons at Scotia Suzuki — can they still come?"

Yes. Always. Both camps welcome children from any school, any background, any experience level. The Intensive Camp in particular draws students from across Halifax who simply want to level up their playing in an extraordinary week. You do not need to be a Scotia Suzuki family to join our camp family.
