Most classes run 6 to 12 people. Small enough that your teacher knows what you're working on. Small enough that by week four you're saving someone a seat.

Our ACAC instructors don't teach adults as a side job between other things. They teach adults because they love it — and they know the difference between a nervous 58-year-old holding a violin for the first time and a nine-year-old doing the same thing.

Genuinely easy

37 parking spots right behind the building. One flat payment for the whole term. And no shopping list to work through before you start — for most classes we provide the supplies, or we lend them to you while you find your feet.

The only exception is guitar and violin, where you'll need your own instrument. Don't let that stop you — renting one in Halifax is simple and inexpensive, and we'll walk you through exactly how.

QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING ABOUT

"I'm a complete beginner with no experience at all — will I fit in?" You'll fit right in, and you'll be in the majority. Most people in an ACAC class are starting from scratch or coming back to something they loved twenty years ago. The class is built for exactly that. What surprises people most isn't how fast it clicks — it's how quickly the person sitting beside them becomes someone they look forward to seeing every week.

"I played a long time ago but I need to start at the beginning — should I take the beginner class?" Yes. Take the beginner class and let it be easy on yourself. When the material feels a little easy, that means your technique is locking in properly — and you'll move faster later because of it. When something feels hard, it's easy to get discouraged and quietly stop coming. When it feels good, it becomes part of your life. Start there, enjoy it, and when you're ready you can move up a level or add private lessons.

"What if I'm too old for this?" Our students range from 18 to 89. And nobody will find that remarkable. Every class adapts to your comfort level and whatever your body is doing that week. The people who start later often turn out to be the most enthusiastic in the room: "I just started painting this year and I can't believe how much fun I'm having. I need to paint every single week for the rest of my life. I love my teacher — she's so encouraging and FUN."

"Will I embarrass myself?" Nobody's watching. Everyone in the room is absorbed in their own page, their own canvas, their own footwork — and quietly relieved that you're there too, being a beginner alongside them. Within about twenty minutes you'll forget to be self-conscious. It happens to almost everyone.

"Do I need to buy expensive supplies or equipment?" No. Keeping this simple is the whole point. Before your first class you'll get a short list of what you need — often nothing at all. Most supplies and instruments can be provided or borrowed while you're getting started, so you can find out whether you love it before you spend a dollar on it.

"What if I don't have time to practise?" Then don't. There's no homework and nobody's checking. Your class is designed to be worth your time whether you touch it between weeks or not. Show up, enjoy the hour, go home. That's the whole arrangement.

"What if I have to miss a class — or several?" Come when you can. Nobody's taking a register. At around $12 a class, the odd absence is already built into what you're paying. Most people miss two or three of the twelve, and that's expected — work runs late, the kids get sick, February happens. Come to nine of the twelve and you've had a wonderful term. The full block is booked so classes stay small and your teacher stays committed to your group. There's no attendance requirement attached to it.

"Can I bring a friend, or my partner to the partner dance class?" Please do. Partner Dance is more fun with someone you know, and half the members joined because somebody dragged them along. Just book two spots — they don't need to be at your level.

"I'm already a Scotia Suzuki parent. Is this for me too?" Especially you. Some of the happiest ACAC members are parents who spent years in the waiting room while their kids had lessons, and one September decided the hour was theirs. Same building. Often the same night. Convenient in the way almost nothing else in your week is.

How long is each class, and what if not enough people register? Most music classes run 45 minutes. If only two people register for a music class, it runs 30 minutes instead — with two people in the room, you get close to semi-private attention, so less time buys more of it. We confirm your class length by email the week before the term starts, so you'll always know before you walk in. Movement and art classes always run their full scheduled length. These need a minimum of three registrations to go ahead. If a class doesn't reach three, you'll receive a full refund, or a credit to hop over to any other class you like the look of.
